Course objectives

The main objective of the course is providing the basis for the molecular understanding of the pathogenesis, diagnosis and target therapy of hematologic malignancies

 

Knowledge and skills expectations

The student is expected to have a general knowledge of the human genome, of the concepts of proto-oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes, and of the main technologies for genomic investigations

 

Course program

The hematopoietic stem cell and the process of hematopoiesis; the molecular basis and rationale for molecular diagnostics and target therapy of: acute leukemias; chronic myeloid leukemia; myeloproliferative neoplasms; chronic lymphocytic leukemia; lymphoma

Methods of evaluation

  1. Written exam: the student will be asked to assess whether a number of statements are true/false, and to provide a brief comment and justification of the choice that has been made
  2. Oral exam: critical discussion of the written exam and of the journal club presented by the student
