Course objectives

The aims of the course are:

    1. To know the components of the immune system involved in graft rejection
    2. To know HLA system
    3. To know the Effector Mechanisms of allograft rejection
    4. To know the procedures for HLA typing
    5. To know the mechanisms targeted by immunosuppressive therapy

 

Knowledge and skills expectations

Cell biology, basic immunology, molecular biology, pathophysiology of diseases hitting the immune system

 

Course program

Overview of Basic Immunology

    1. The innate immune system: macrophages, dendritic cells and complement
    2. The adaptive immune system: T cells, B cells and antibodies
    3. Antigen presenting cells and the MHC system

Components of the Immune system involved in graft Rejection

    1. Antigen presenting cells (Dendritic cells, Macrophages, Activated B Cells)
    2. B cells and antibodies (Preformed antibodies, Natural antibodies, Preformed antibodies from prior sensitization, Induced antibodies)
    3. T cells

Effector Mechanisms of Allograft Rejection

    1. Hyperacute Rejection
    2. Acute Rejection
    3. Chronic Rejection

HLA typing

    1. Microtoxicity test
    2. Mixed lymphocyte reaction

Immunosuppressive therapy

    1. Conventional drugs
    2. New generation drugs
