Course objectives

The course aims to provide the concepts of biocompatibility and the body's reaction to implants, the principles of materials’ science and properties, the main classes of materials for biomedical use and specific examples of application in the prosthesis fabrication.

 

Knowledge and skills expectations

Students need basic knowledge about the processes of cell adhesion and cell interactions with the extracellular environment, inflammatory processes, induction of the coagulation cascade. Also required is a solid knowledge of the basics of human anatomy.

 

Course program

  1. Evaluation of the biocompatibility of materials: host response (inflammation, tissue regeneration, infection), response of the material. Test of in vitro bio-hemocompatibility. Strategies for the production of bio-mimetic materials, able to interact biochemically with cells and tissues. 
  2. Polymers: structure and bio-mechanical properties. 
  3. Principles of biomechanics. 
  4. Biomaterials applications: Vascular prostheses. Materials for vascular prostheses. Endovascular materials. Prosthetic heart valves. Orthopedic implants.
