Obiettivi della ricerca 1) Studio dell`interazione nucleare forte mediante collisioni positrone-protone al collisore HERA presso il laboratorio DESY di Amburgo.
Risultati ottenuti 1) La ricerca qui discussa si svolge presso il Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY, http://www.desy.de) di Amburgo. A DESY è stato in funzione fino al 2007 HERA, un anello di collisioni che accelerava elettroni (e) fino a un`energia di 27.5 GeV e protoni (p) fino a 920 GeV, permettendo collisioni con una risoluzione spaziale dell`ordine di 10^-18m. M. Arneodo e M. Ruspa fanno parte della collaborazione internazionale ZEUS (http://www-zeus.desy.de) che ha costruito un sistema di rivelatori per particelle in corrispondenza di uno dei punti di incontro dei due fasci di HERA. Le collisioni studiate tra un oggetto puntiforme, quale l`elettrone, e il protone permettono di indagare la struttura del protone. Ad HERA era installato un secondo sistema di rivelazione con scopi analoghi, facente capo alla collaborazione internazionale H1 (http://www-h1.desy.de). L`attività nel 2012 si è concentrata sulla pubblicazione del lavoro di combinazione delle misure, effettuate e da ZEUS e H1, del processo di diffrazione inclusiva ep --> eXp, in cui il protone emerge dalla collisione intatto e con energia prossima a quella del fascio (con X si indica l`insieme di particelle, per lo più pioni, che vengono create nella collisione). L`ottenimento di un set di dati unico e` il primo passo verso l`estrazione di funzioni di densita` partoniche diffrattive - una delle importanti ed attese eredita` di HERA.   
Obiettivi della ricerca 2) Studio delle prestazioni dei rivelatori al silicio per radiazione ionizzante "pixel 3D edgeless detectors".
Risultati ottenuti 2) I rivelatori al silicio "pixel 3D edgeless detectors" possono avere applicazioni nel campo della diagnostica medica per immagini oltre che della fisica delle alte energie. Sono stati caratterizzati in laboratorio e su fascio (presso il laboratorio Fermilab di Chicago, http://www.fnal.gov/) rivelatori 3D prodotti alla Sintef (Oslo, Norvegia) e alla FBK (Trento) con elettrodi di varia configurazione.   
Obiettivi della ricerca 3) Studio di collisioni protone-protone al collisore LHC presso il laboratorio CERN di Ginevra.

Obiettivi della ricerca 4) Studio di una metodologia basata su tecniche di fusione di immagine per la diagnosi precoce della malattia di Parkinson.
Risultati ottenuti 4) La risonanza magnetica nucleare (RMN) e` utilizzata per la diagnosi differenziale dei parkinsonismi, attraverso la visualizzazione della captazione dei trasportatori della dopamina nei gangli basali (putamen e caudato). Tuttavia, effetti di volume parziale (PVE) complicano l`interpretazione delle immagini, il che puo` pregiudicare una diagnosi precoce della malattia, dato che i primi sintomi sono a loro volta sfuggenti. Grazie all`alta specificita` e alla purezza radionuclidica dei marcatori della dopamina, immagini ottenute con tomografia a fotone singolo (SPECT) possono contribuire a una diagnosi corretta. In collaborazione con l`Ospedale Santa Croce e Carle di Cuneo e` stato sviluppato un metodo qualitativo per la diagnosi precoce basato sulla fusione delle immagini RMN del paziente reale con immagini SPECT virtuali del paziente come se fosse sano. Queste ultime sono state ottenute deducendo l`esatta morfologia dell`encefalo dalle sezioni RMN e riempiendo poi i gangli basali con livelli di attivita` fisiologici. Il confronto con immagini SPECT reali riferite al quesito clinico aiuta a dirimere tra PVE e scarsa captazione di radiofarmaco, segno di esordio di malattia. 
Collaborazioni in atto M. Arneodo e M. Ruspa fanno parte della collaborazione ZEUS che consiste di circa 450 fisici appartenenti ai seguenti paesi: Canada, Corea, Germania, Giappone, Gran Bretagna, Israele, Italia (Bologna, Cosenza, Firenze, Padova, Piemonte Orientale, Roma, Torino), Kazakhistan, Olanda, Polonia, Russia, Spagna, USA.
